3-2.2 Summarize the motives, activities, and accomplishments of the exploration of South Carolina by the Spanish, French and English.
CCR Standards: Reading Anchor Standards 1 & 9, Writing Anchor Standards 1, 4, 6 & 8
Your task: The year is sometime around 1492. You have decided that you want to explore the new world, but you know that it will cost lots of money, and you don't have it! Write a letter to your king or queen explaining why he/she should support you in this quest by giving you money, ship(s) and men to go with you. Be sure to let the king or queen know what's in it for him/her!! Be convincing! You can be Christopher Columbus, Hernando De Soto, both for Spain or Jean Ribault for France.
Steps you will be following: In order to plan and create your letter, you will do all of the following:
1) Click on the article "Why did the Europeans explored the new world?" Read it and take dash notes as you read.
2) Watch the video about Christopher Columbus and take dash notes. You may pause the video or re-watch it as often as you need to.
3) Go to the resources page and look at the map of the world so you can see where the explorers traveled.
4) Look at the pictures of the explorers. Select one that you choose to "be" and notice what country he represents.
5) Organize your information, plan what you will say in your letter (perhaps use a web or some graphic organizer), and then write your letter. Be sure to use your notes as you explain your reasons.
6) You can refer to the article and re-watch the video on the resources page as often as you need to.he
